What it is

Housing Aid for Older People is funded by the Department of Housing and run by each local council. It helps older people stay in their own homes by paying towards repairs that make the home safe, warm and dry.

Councils means-test the household income. The steps and contractor paperwork are the same as for the Housing Adaptation Grant.

The Mobility Aids Grant

The Mobility Aids Grant is up to €8,000 for smaller works that help an older person or a person with a disability get around the home, such as grab rails, a level-access shower, ramps or a stairlift. You apply to your council in the same way, and the council approves the quote before work starts.

How to apply

  1. Talk to your council. Get the application form and check the age and income rules.
  2. Get an itemised quote. Your contractor sends it with their current tax clearance or C2 details.
  3. Apply to the council. Send the form, the quote and the supporting documents.
  4. Wait for approval. The council approves the work and the grant amount in writing.
  5. Get the work done. Your contractor does the approved work only.
  6. Final inspection and payment. The council inspects the work and pays the grant on the final invoice by bank transfer to you.

Do you need approval before work starts?

Yes. The council must approve the itemised quote before any work starts. Work done before approval isn't covered.
